Mae English gave Scotland the early lead in just the eighth minute, tapping in after Neve McDonald had hit the crossbar.

McDonald would score a second just before the hour mark, firing through Iceland’s goalkeeper after good work on the right wing from Sophie Black.

For Highlanders watching the live stream on YouTube, though, the highlight of the match came with around five minutes left on the clock, when Syrjanen came on as a substitute to represent Scotland for the first time, and she helped the side hold on to a 2-0 victory.

Up next is a match against Northern Ireland on Friday, kicking off at 11.30am back at Broadwood Stadium.

Syrjanen’s club, meanwhile, will be hoping to progress into the second round of the Scottish Cup against St Mirren on Sunday having seen their under-18s and development squad both lift silverware last weekend.
