Dingwall Academy first year pupil and Highland Budokan student Angus Mowat becomes British Schools Judo champion in Sheffield

A Dingwall Academy pupil has become British Schools judo champion for his age category.

First year pupil Angus Mowat travelled down to Sheffield last weekend with his Highland Budokan teammates to compete in the British Schools Judo Championship.

As one of six entrants in the under-55kg category for his age group, Mowat excelled in Yorkshire to take the top prize.

It is the latest accolade in what looks like a burgeoning career in judo, with the youngster already having won gold at the Scottish Closed Championships, after which he was invited to train with the Scottish Talent Development Squad.

Having first picked up judo at five years old, Contin’s Mowat has gone on to compete at competitions in Birmingham, Cardiff and even Holland in the last year, as well as the Scottish Grand Prix across Paisley, Motherwell, Aberdeen and Inverness.

He trains three times-a-week under coaches Robert Inglis and Ramsay Darling at Highland Budokan, who run sessions at Inverness Leisure, Millburn Academy and Dingwall Academy.

A club spokesperson said: “It was a fantastic achievement by Angus.

“We have really talented, passionate and determined judoka representing our club and we are immensely proud of all of them.”

Mowat was just one of seven athletes representing Highland Budokan at the Schools Championship in Sheffield.

He was not the only medallist either, with Lois Stewart winning bronze in the under-32kg girls category.

Some of the club’s squad were competing at such a high level for the first time, but that did not stop them taking on new challenges and impressing – with Lewis Daly, for example, stepping up to a new weight class.

Mowat’s title, though, adds to the club’s collection, with Highland Budokan’s performance squad boasting Welsh Championship, Scottish Championship, British Championship, Liverpool Open and English Open winners too.

On the Schools Championship in general, British Judo wrote on their website: “This past weekend, young Judokas from all around the UK proudly represented their schools at the British Schools Judo Championships at the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield.

“It was an incredible event, filled with energy, excitement, and plenty of smiles both on and off the mat. Seeing so many friends and family cheering loudly for their fighters truly made the British Schools Judo Championships 2025 special.

“Competing in this championship is about more than just individual success; it’s also about representing your school and community. We hope every competitor takes pride in their performance, and we’re sure their schools are equally proud of the way they carried themselves and gave their best effort.”
