Akil Wright thunderbolt and Noah Chilvers finish helps Ross County to valuable Premiership victory over Aberdeen in opening match of 2025
Ross County got 2025 off to a winning start away at Aberdeen, claiming a 2-1 victory over their hosts at Pittodrie.
Blizzard conditions made the match tricky for both sides, and even led to a five-minute delay in the first half in order to clear the pitch lines so that they could be visible.
However, when play resumed it was the Staggies who took the lead in spectacular fashion.
Akil Wright took aim from 30 yards out and produced a goal of the season contender to open the scoring in the 23rd minute to put County 1-0 ahead.
Shortly before the 45 minutes were up, Michee Efete – playing at left wing back – was forced off through injury and was replaced by George Harmon.
The earlier delays would provide both sides with an opportunity, though, with 10 minutes added at the end of the first half.
Jordan White and New Year’s Day arrival Nohan Kenneh each had chances to extend County’s advantage, but instead it was Kevin Nisbet who levelled the scores for Aberdeen in the 56th minute directly from a free kick that visiting goalkeeper Jordan Amissah will not want to see again any time soon.
The Dons nearly took the lead shortly after the restart when Duk saw his effort come crashing back off the crossbar.
However, it was County who would get the next goal at Pittodrie, with Noah Chilvers cutting in from the left flank and lifting the ball over Aberdeen stopper Ross Doohan, making it 2-1 to the visitors on the hour mark.
Injury problems continued for the Staggies as Ryan Leak was forced off in the 73rd minute after going down off the ball.
That could not put too much of a dampener on what was a vital three points for Ross County though, particularly given Hearts also claimed victory this afternoon and St Johnstone picked up a point against Hibernian.
