Deephaven shooters battle it out for a share of the spoils

THE final 50-bird DTL winter series shoot at Highland Deephaven clay pigeon club attracted 42 guns in a competition sponsored by Angus Cameron from Evanton.

A cold east wind with winter showers kept the birds high and hard to hit. In the first half, only Donald Mackay (Inverness) and Douglas Henderson (Ardgay) had red on the board with both on 25/74.

In the second half, Donald Mackay fell away with Angus Cameron making a 25/75 and Kenny Ross 25/71. Douglas Henderson held on with a 25/75 to finish on 50/149 and take high gun.

Senior winner was Angus Cameron on 46/135, 2nd was Kevin Mackay (Ullapool) on 45/133 and 3rd equal were Alex Morrison (Durness), Kenny Ross (Achnasheen) and John Falconer (Dores), all on 45/132. Veterans was won by Sandy Gall (Invergordon) on 47/134, 2nd was Robert Kling (Munlochy) on 40/119, ladies was won by Catherine Fraser (Inverness), 2nd was Olive Harper (Black Isle) on 39/114. Junior’s was a tie and a shoot-off was needed, won by Aidan Morrison (Nairn). In 2nd was David Hunter (Lochinver) on 43/122. Novices was won by Ewen Ross (Tomatin) on 35/100.

The winter series comprises nine shoots with the best six scores to count in all classes. With all the scores tallied it was a tie at the top with Donald Mackay and David Alford (Black Isle) on 862. In a 25-bird shoot-off, Donald Mackay won the £100 first prize with David Alford taking the seniors top spot, with Archie Sinclair junior (Thurso) 2nd on 855 and Douglas Henderson 3rd on 853. Veteran class was won by Sandy Gall on 803, 2nd Graham Gray (Invergordon) on 791. Ladies class was won by Catherine Fraser on 806, 2nd was Olive Harper on 723, junior winner was David Hunter on 797, novices was won by Ewen Ross on 602.

The next shoot is on March 31, the first of the 100-bird selection shoots.
