Don Cowie only intends to enter the transfer market to strengthen the spine of Ross County’s team
Ross County will be looking to strengthen the spine of their team this summer – but manager Don Cowie insists he will not make signings for the sake of adding numbers.
A handful of players have left Dingwall this summer, albeit only a couple who were playing regularly last season.
Loans coming to an end has left the Staggies with shallow depth at the back especially though, so there is an obvious area to focus on in the transfer market ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
That said, Cowie does have prospects who will be champing at the bit to get more playing time in Dingwall next season, so he is adamant he will not be bringing players in if he does not think they would be an upgrade on what he already has at his disposal.
“We’re all on the same page at the club – we don’t want to sign players for the sake of it,” Cowie insisted ahead of the signings of Will Nightingale and Ricki Lamie.
“We want to sign players who are better than what we’ve got. That ties in to trying to improve next season, but it takes time.
“We are in discussions with players, and we’re being patient, then it’s about getting the right people in to help us moving forward.
“It was good to get George Harmon and Michee Efete retained. They give us real balance with what we’ve already got at the club in James Brown and Josh Reid, and they will all be pushing each other to get into the team. That’s what I want to try and create across the club.”
“Down the spine of the team. In defence, most of last season we played with a back three, so we’re covered at wing back.
“Centre half, we need to look to recruit. Right now the only senior ones we have are Ryan Leak and Jack Baldwin, so we need to add to that.
“In midfield we’ve lost Yan Dhanda and Ross Callachan, and the loan players have left, so we need to reinforce in there.
“We have four strikers, so we’re well stocked in that area right now, but we need to get a goalkeeper as well with George Wickens going back to Fulham.
“Those are the key areas we’re prioritising right now.”
