Ross County under-18s named youth team of the year at Scottish Women’s Football annual awards ceremony

Ross County’s under-18 girls team scooped the youth team of the year prize at Scottish Women’s Football annual awards.

Alongside such football luminaries as Scottish legend Rose Reilly, Rangers midfielder Tessel Middag, Celtic star Amy Gallagher and Celtic head coach Elena Sadiku, County had a handful of nominations across several awards.

Glenda Scobbie was shortlisted for volunteer of the year, as was head coach Iain MacIver for youth coach of the year.

On the pitch, both Daisy Fraser and Keira Syrjanen were shortlisted for Highlands and Islands player of the year, while Syrjanen had a second nomination for youth player of the year.

As a team, County were shortlisted for sustainable club of the year as well as the award they won: youth team of the year.

That triumph came as a result of an undefeated streak in their league to date, as well as winning their League Cup and reaching the semi finals of the Scottish Cup – only losing in extra time.

The bulk of County’s Highlands and Islands League squad were also members of the under-18s side, with a number of those players now representing the club in the SWFL North.

Head coach Iain MacIver commented: “It was a fantastic night which all the players who were able to attend thoroughly enjoyed.

“The team has had a fantastic season.

“The team has been together for a number of years, and travel a huge amount of miles every season with no complaint.

“Last year they won the under-16s league undefeated, meaning ti has now been over two years since the squad last lost a league match.

“Their dedication to the team and the sport is unrivalled with players travelling long distances, including ferry trips and overnight stays to play for the team.

“Players travel from Orkney, Eriskay and Stornoway as well as across Ross-shire and the Highlands, so all the girls’ commitment to the game and the team is second to none.

“It was a hugely deserved award which recognises their commitment and passion for the game.”

Ross County’s under-18 girls have one more match to play before the end of 2024, facing Highland rivals Inverness Caledonian Thistle this Saturday.
