A PROMISING young Tain athlete has made her mark with a string of expectation-busting performances in a season of cross country events which saw her crowned champion.

Constance Nankivell (12) won the first North Cross Country League race of the season in Thurso back in October 2012. There followed an outstanding run at Nairn in the North District Cross Country Relays, when she led her team to victory and recorded the fastest lap of the day by any girl of any age.

Further victories came in the North League at Inverness and Elgin and she ended the year by winning the North District Championship at Evanton.

In January, Constance celebrated her selection for Scotland North and travelled to Edinburgh for the annual Inter District competition, where she exceeded all expectations by finishing tenth.

On her return to the North League, there were two more victories at Edderton and Keith and, following the final race at Forres, she was crowned League Champion having completed an undefeated season.

She then made the long journey to Irvine in March for the Scottish Schools’ Under 14 Championships, producing her best result of the season by claiming an outstanding seventh place from a field of almost 200 runners.

Her coach at East Sutherland AC, John Davies, said: “Constance is a very popular member of our training group and, despite being relatively inexperienced, has produced excellent results at the very highest level this season.”
