Susan Campbell became Muir of Ord Golf Club’s ladies’ champion for the second time after a final hole thriller against Gayle Anderson.

The retired nurse from Beauly held her nerve at the 18th hole to swing the winning putt and regain the title she last won in 2017.

Campbell (60) was three shots ahead at the 14th before Anderson won the next three holes to set up a tense finish at the 18th.

But Campbell with a handicap of 16, compared to Anderson’s 11, maintained her composure when it counted in the final.

She says it was a nerve-racking conclusion after Anderson came storming back, but she still managed to come out on top.

“It was a tight match as Gayle has a lower handicap than I do so it was not an easy task,” she said.

“It was all square at the 18th after I had been up by three and lost at the 15th, 16th and 17th.

“I managed to win it on the final hole and I’m pleased to have won.”

It was Campbell’s first tournament win of the season during a year which has been disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.

She won the trophy for the first time three years ago after being taken to two extra holes.

Campbell first learned to play golf 30 years ago when she was introduced to the sport by her parents.

Now, she has become one of the top players at the club.

Campbell says the Muir of Ord Championship was the biggest tournament of the season for her, but also plans to play in other competitions this year.

This had included the charity open which was planned for last weekend which she helped organise in her position as handicap and competition secretary, but that was called off due to weather conditions.

Meanwhile in the ladies’ handicap championship, Fiona Rice was crowned champion when she defeated Yvonne Martin in the final.

Elsewhere at the Muir of Ord Golf Club Championships, in the junior 18-hole competition, Ryan Dryburgh was crowned champion after he defeated Melissa Graham.

In the junior nine-hole championship final, Eoin Munro was victorious over Morgan Frame.
