Alness United see off Golspie to win first silverware in five years

The Alness United juggernaut rolled on last Saturday with a 3-2 victory against Golspie Sutherland in the Football Times Cup Final at Helmsdale’s Couper Park.

It was United’s seventh straight win of the campaign and despite being pegged back twice by a dogged Golspie side they held out for the win their first trophy in five years after taking the lead for a third time.

United drew first blood in the 16th minute when Mike Rae rose at the back post to head home a Craig Munro free kick.

But the lead did not last long and Golspie’s Sandy Sutherland scored following a goalmouth melee a couple of minutes later.
