ALNESS United could be crowned North Caledonian League Division Two champions on Wednesday night if they win their next two games.

Victory tomorrow against bottom of the table Scourie at Dalmore Park, would leave Alness needing one more victory to lift the Ness Cup.

United face second-place Inverness Athletic in Muir of Ord on Wednesday, where three points would put them out of reach of the chasing pack.

A draw would mean Nairn County A would still be able to chase down Alness if they win their final two games.

But Alness manager Robert MacCormack is fully aware their title fate is in their own hands.

He says he is considering fielding different players for both games coming up.

But he says he knows he has to concentrate on the challenge of Scourie before even considering Wednesday night’s potential title-winning clash against Athletic.

“We have a strong-looking squad, and we might change things for Saturday and then see who is available for Wednesday night,” he said.

“Obviously winning league titles is excellent and it is all down to the boys. They have been at it since the first game and have been tremendous.

“We have four games remaining, we will be going out to win every one of them.

“It wasn’t the division that we wanted to play in, but it is the one that we were put in, and the boys have been brilliant with their attitude towards the competition.”

The league is merging into one division next season and MacCormack is looking forward to testing themselves against the top sides.

“That is great news as it is what the boys want,” said MacCormack.

“It is also what everyone involved in the club wants, and it is good we are all back in one division again.

“It will be a good league to get going in August.”

Alness warmed up for tomorrow’s match with a 4-3 win over Inverness and District champions Maryburgh on Wednesday.
