Young Kyle musicians welcome Waverley paddle steamer to Lochalsh
YOUNG musicians in Kyle of Lochalsh have welcomed in the world’s last seagoing paddle steamer, the Waverley, with a piece of traditional Highland culture.
The Lochalsh Junior Pipe Band (LJPB) took to the Kyle pier to pipe in the “magnificent” paddle steamer, which was built in 1946.
LJPB said: “Great night down at the Kyle pier welcoming the Waverley back after its evening cruise. It was lovely to see so many happy people coming off the boat and the folk waiting to get aboard for their evening sail.
“Thanks to all the folk who were down watching the band, and the magnificent Waverley paddle steamer sailing back into Kyle once again. The weather and midges were kind to us.
“We also had three new drummers playing for the first time with the band — well done Monica, Jess and John.”
The Waverley paid a visit to multiple Wester Ross villages between May 20 to 22 — marking the 50th anniversary of her first sailing in preservation.
