A YOUNG dolphin that washed up on the shore near Evanton has been put to sleep in what was described as a “sad ending” for the creature.

Members of the public spotted a common dolphin stranded high on the pebbled seashore near the Easter Ross village.

Medics from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR), a frontline charity responding to marine mammals in distress, quickly arrived on scene.

“We arrived quickly with specialist rescue equipment and carried out a full assessment with veterinary support,” BDMLR said in a post on social media. “The dolphin was found to be a juvenile male, in moderate body condition with no obvious injuries.”

Under guidance, the medics supported the dolphin in the water to help reduce stress and help stabilise his condition. However the dolphin did not respond, and the overall condition declined.

BDMLR continued: “On welfare grounds, the decision was made to put the dolphin to sleep to prevent further suffering. He has since gone for a post-mortem examination to help us understand more about why he stranded and the life he led. [It was] a sad ending.

“We extend our warmest and heartfelt thanks to the member of the public who raised the alarm, and to our incredible medics for their dedication, compassion and teamwork throughout this response.”
