Highland yellow weather warning issued by Met Office amid forecast for heavy, persistent rain and windy conditions
A yellow weather warning has been issued for parts of the Highlands amid forecasts for heavy and persistent rain heading into the weekend.
The Met Office has issued the warning amid forecasts for up to 100mm of rain in some spots, and gusty winds.
The warning coincides with the start of the school summer holidays and comes into force at 6am on Friday and will remain in place until 3pm on Saturday.
“Rain is expected to be persistent, and heavy at times, during much of Friday and overnight, before slowly easing later on Saturday,” said a Met Office spokesperson. “Forty to 60mm of rain is expected to build up quite widely with in excess of 100mm over a few mountains.
“Rain will be accompanied by windy conditions, especially Friday daytime when gusts will reach 40 to 50 mph around coasts and hills.”
The area of the alert covers western Scotland from Gruinard Bay and Little Loch Broom in the north to the northern tip of Arran in the south.
It was extends westward across Skye, Mull, the Small Isles, Colonsay and Jura, and pushes eastward into the Great Glen, Glencoe, Loch Lomond and Greenock.
