Woman dies after kayaking incident on Loch Torridon in Wester Ross, police confirm

A WOMAN has died after a kayaking tragedy in Wester Ross.

The incident happened on Loch Torridon this morning.

HM Coastguard said: "Shortly after 11am today, we received a 999 call from a member of the public reporting they were in difficulty in the water in Upper Loch Torridon.

"Coastguard Rescue Teams from Applecross and Loch Ewe, Portree and Kyle of Lochalsh RNLI lifeboats, several local vessels and the search and rescue helicopter from Stornoway conducted a search of the area. The person was located and brought to shore by a lifeboat."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 12.05pm on Tuesday, 17 May, police received a report of concern for a kayaker on Loch Torridon, near Shieldaig.

"Officers assisted Coastguard in tracing the woman, who was recovered but later died at the scene.

"Her next of kin have been made aware and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”
