Walker (55) dies after being struck by lightning in the Highlands

A WOMAN has been killed after being struck by lightning while walking in the Highlands.

The report of the freak accident on Saturday afternoon sparked a major response from the emergency services but a 55-year-old woman died as a result of her injuries.

Another was taken for treatment to Belford Hospital in Fort William, where her condition was said by police to be stable.

The pair were in a walking group of seven people on the Na Gruagaichean in the Mamore Range near Kinlochleven.

Police said they were alerted to the incident at 5.42pm when it was reported that two members of the walking group had been struck by lightning and injured.

Assistance was sought from an HM Coasgtguard helicopter, Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team and Scottish Ambulance service heli-med and ambulances.

The party were traced on Na Gruagaichean. Police said the two casualties and the rest of their party were airlifted to Fort William.

Police said next of kin of the woman who died have been advised and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.

Inspector Isla Campbell, local area policing Inspector for Lochaber, said: "We are grateful for the prompt and professional response from partner agencies to this tragic incident and offer our condolences to the lady's family."
