Officers are appealing for witnesses following a fatal crash involving three vehicles on the A836 near to Loch Crochach, west of Bettyhill in Sutherland.

A motorcyclist died at the scene and his pillion passenger was taken to hospital.

The incident was reported to police at around 5.40pm on Friday and involved a black Yamaha motorcycle, a blue Fiat Doblo van and a blue Vauxhall car.

A 63-year-old man, the rider of the motorcycle, was pronounced at the scene.

His pillion, a 56-year-old woman, was taken by air ambulance to Raigmore Hospital. Her injuries are described as serious, but not life-threatening by medical professionals.

The driver of the van and the three people travelling in the car, were not injured.

The road was closed for around six hours to allow enquiries to be carried out, and re-opened just after midnight following the recovery of all the vehicles.

Dingwall road policing sergeant Christopher Donaldson said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased at this very difficult time.

“Our investigation continues and I would appeal to anyone who saw what happened, or has relevant dash cam footage, to please get in touch. Information can be passed to Police Scotland by calling 101, and quoting reference 3127 of Friday, 13 August.”
