PEOPLE living in an Easter Ross community at the heart of significant change will find out later this week the names of of the two new councillors to represent them.

The scene has been set for the Highland Council Cromarty Firth by-election at which 12 hopefuls will bid to capture the two available seats.

The ward is represented by a total of four councillors with the two vacancies created by the earlier resignation of Molly Nolan and Pauline Munro.

The ward - at the heart of the new freeport development - is currently represented by Tamala Collier (SNP) and Maxine Smith (Highland Alliance).

Voting takes place on Thursday of this week with results expected on Friday.

Voters are this week being reminded to be ready to make their vote count.

The single transferable vote system will be used.

Instead of using a cross, voters should number the candidates in the order of their choice, putting a number 1 in the box next to the name of the candidate who is their first choice, 2 in the box next to their second choice and so on.

Voters can mark as many choices as they wish.

Anyone who has requested a postal vote will not be able to vote in person at a polling station.

If you are unable to post it in time, it is possible to hand in your completed postal pack into any of the polling stations between 7am and 10pm on Thursday (September 26).

There are no restrictions on the number of postal votes that can be handed in to a polling station.

For those opting to vote in person on Thursday, polling stations will be open from 7am until 10pm. Voters are reminded to check their poll cards as this will have details of where they need to go to cast their vote.
