A VIRTUAL event today will remind people what they are missing with the cancellation of this year’s Ullapool Book Festival.

Words from the West will be live on the book festival’s Facebook from 7.30pm, giving a live two-hour taster of “what might have been”.

Organisers say: “We know it will not be the same as being here at the real thing. There will be no craic, camaraderie or cake – but there will be great writers, poets and music. We hope it will tide you over until May 2021.”

Three new poems will be read on the night by the poets who created them – George Gunn, Jim Carruth and Donald S Murray.

There will also be a session with the festival’s honorary president Chris Dolan, whose new book Everything Passes, Everything Remains: Freewheeling Through Spain, Song and Memory is a “kind of travelogue of 45 years’ obsession with Spain, pedalling through some lesser-known parts of the country”.

Donald S Murray will speak live from his home in Shetland about his novel As the Women Lay Dreaming and there will also be performances from young traditional musicians Joseph Peach, Achiltibue and Charlie Grey, Fort Augustus
