Independent businesses are to be helped to get a share of the growing online retail market in a webinar organised by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).

The coronavirus pandemic has accelerated the trend towards online shopping, with figures from the British Retail Consortium showing that non-food online sales jumped by 44.8 per cent in December.

The FSB webinar, which will take place between 10am and 11.30am on Thursday, January 28, is aimed at helping businesses begin or add to an online shopping presence.

FSB’s Highlands and Islands development manager, David Richardson, said: “The FSB is encouraging all appropriate business owners and managers to consider whether they can afford not to add online sales to their mixes, and if they are already selling online, whether they could do so better.

“We fervently hope that as many businesses in the Inverness area as possible will join us for this important event.”

The webinar will be based on interviews conducted by University of the Highlands and Islands key account director, Gary Campbell.

The first is with William Crawford, co-director of the Old School in Beauly, which saw online sales increase by more than 500 per cent in the first lockdown.

The second interview is with Fergus Weir, managing director of Inverness e-commerce and digital marketing specialist Teclan, while finally, Danny Gallagher of Highland Business Gateway will discuss the public sector support available to help businesses go down the e-commerce route.
