TORRENTIAL rain showers could hit large parts of Ross-shire and the wider Highlands later today, the Met Office has warned.

Its forecasters have issued a yellow weather warning for rain, which comes into force at 1pm on Tuesday and runs until 9pm this evening. Not everywhere will experience showers, but those that do could see high levels of rain falling in a short period - increasing the chances of localised flooding and surface water on roads.

The area affected by the warning in Ross-shire extends as far west as Glen Shiel, Glen Docherty and the head of Loch Broom, and as far east as Alness, Invergordon and Fortrose/Rosemarkie.

"Heavy showers are expected on Tuesday afternoon and may bring some disruption," said a Met Office spokesman.

"There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings along with fast flowing or deep floodwater.

"Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

"Where flooding occurs, there is a chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services.

"There is a slight chance of power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses.

"There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads."

The wider alert extends almost as far north as Kylesku in Sutherland and as far south as the Solway Firth and the Borders. Inverness, Fort William, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Perth all sit inside the warning area.
