WATCH: Hollywood movie star Karen Gillan tells why she's backing scholarships for young people at Highland TFX Performing Arts Academy

MOVIE star Karen Gillan's struggle to raise cash to pursue her dream has prompted her to offer help to youngsters who are keen to follow in her footsteps.

The Hollywood actress shared a video on Instagram explaining why she's got involved in a scholarship scheme with TFX Performing Arts Academy and the Inverness Courier.

Ms Gillan also shared a Highland News report, from when she was 16 years old, and looking to make her next step.

The 33-year-old wrote on Instagram: "Here’s the old newspaper article that inspired the Theatre FX scholarships. Applications are open right now!!

"Me and my parents tried to raise the funds to go to a performing arts school but were unable to raise the money and I couldn’t go to the school…therefore, I’m bringing it full circle and providing 2 scholarship places at @tfxperform for young performers in the Highlands of Scotland.

"@theinvernesscourier is providing 2 more positions so that’s FOUR SCHOLARSHIPS available! Apply to the link in my bio.

"Looking forward to seeing your audition tapes!!"
