UPDATE: ‘Disruption until end of the day’ on Highland Mainline after train breakdown
Rail passengers using the Highland Mainline face disruption until the end of the day, train bosses have warned after a broken down train blocked the track overnight.
A freight train broke down near Dalwhinnie shortly before 7.45pm last night.
And despite efforts to repair and move the stricken freight train, the line has remained closed ever since, with trains terminating or starting at Perth and other terminating at Kingussie - with limited bus replacement options.
In an update on Saturday morning, Network Rail Scotland and ScotRail initially suggested the disruption would continue until 12.30pm.
But, with trains yet to return to normal, ScotRail’s website is now warning of disruption “until the end of today”.
A spokesperson said: “Because of a broken down train between Dalwhinnie and Blair Atholl all lines are blocked.
“Train services running through these stations will be cancelled, delayed or revised. Disruption is expected until the end of today (06 July).
“Staff on board are currently trying to fix the issue.
“Buses have been requested, but because of very limited replacement transport being secured, passengers are advised to make alternative arrangements.
“Passengers can travel on the alternative route of Edinburgh/Glasgow to Aberdeen to Inverness.”
