WESTER Ross children who have taken a stand to protect the marine environment around them are on the crest of a wave after being recognised for their efforts.

The group of primary and high school pupils from Ullapool have made a real splash in their efforts to help promote and protect the sea around them.

It started when Ullapool Sea Savers launched a successful campaign to ban plastic straws in their village – an effort which reached the corridors of Holyrood and sparked similar drives elsewhere.

Since forming at the start of 2018, individual children have also taken on roles as species ambassadors for animals including flame shells, turtles, dolphin and sharks. One, Poppy Lewis (12) has received an ‘Otter Oscar’ from a Skye-based charity for her efforts.

The kids also campaigned against kelp dredging and travelled to Holyrood to state their case.

Living Seas community officer Noel Hawkins presented the award and hailed the “inspiring” efforts of children “prepared to become active in doing their part to highlight the issue and call on adults and politicians to do more.”
