THREE Ullapool youngsters “jumped out of their seats” when they managed to secure £3000 for a worthy local cause.

Ullapool High School pupils secured a sum of cash for Ullapool’s Cycling Without Age project through the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI).

YPI is an active citizenship programme which empowers young people to make a difference in their community about causes which they care about. Through a programme of teamwork, research and competition, a year group takes part and one team is then chosen to secure the award.

S4 pupils Jarifa, Lily and Amy created a thought-provoking presentation to convince the judges that the money would be put to good use at Cycling Without Age Ullapool. The group even treated a couple of the judges to a ride on Broomie the trishaw.

Lily said: “When we found out we won, we all jumped out of our seats! I also took two of the judges out on a ride on Broomie, and I also took Jarifa and my teacher Mr Crook from the local care home to the high school on the bike.”

Developing the Young Workforce West Highland said: “A fantastic YPI Scotland final today at Ullapool High School - a huge well done to all the S3 groups for engaging and thought provoking presentations on behalf of their charities and for being so knowledgeable about local issues. The judges had a very difficult decision but the winner was Cycling Without Age Ullapool. Well done to everyone for all their hard work!”
