Ullapool cadets' donations for sudden death charity top £22,000

AIR cadets from Ullapool who have raised £22,575 since 1998 for a charity which raises awareness of sudden cardiac death in young people have presented their latest donation to the mother of a local woman who died from the condition.

Every year cadets and staff from the 161 (Ullapool) Detached Flight from Highland Wing take part in a sponsored 13-mile cross country walk as part of the Great Wilderness Challenge at Poolewe in aid of Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).

Pilot Officer Rebecca Kirk RAFVR(T), officer commanding 161 (Ullapool) DF, is pictured handing over a cheque for £1,600 to Alex Fotheringham, the local area representative for CRY.

Mrs Fotheringham’s only child, Joanne, died suddenly in her sleep aged just 24. The primary teacher had been on a trip to Glasgow when she fell victim to what was believed to be an undetected heart problem.

Since then her parents have raised thousands for CRY and held cardiac screening sessions in the village for people aged 16 to 30.

Pilot Officer Kirk said: “It is fantastic that our detached flight has had such a long standing association with CRY and the support our cadets receive from the local community in the sponsorship they raise every year.”

CRY was founded in 1995 to raise awareness of conditions that can lead to young sudden cardiac death and sudden death syndrome.
