UHI student and world champion kickboxer Aidan Lennan named young athlete of the year at Scottish Sports Awards
Highland kickboxer Aidan Lennan has been named Scotland’s young athlete of the year.
The 17-year-old was on the shortlist for the Scottish Sports Awards, which took place at the Glasgow Science Centre and honour the achievements of Scottish athletes.
Lennan has certainly had plenty to celebrate, having dominated world kickboxing with several world championships to his name over recent years.
In 2024, he added two more gold medals to his collection in Budapest en route to being ranked the top junior athlete in the world in his weight category.
Now, the first year sports coaching and development student at UHI can add Scottish youth athlete of the year to his list of awards, having beaten off competition from fellow nominees Erin Boothman (cycling) and Nayma Sheikh (cricket).
Lennan had previously spoken of his surprise at being nominated, saying when the shortlist was revealed: “I didn’t even know that I was nominated when I was told that I made the final shortlist.
“This is the first time that I have been nominated for the award and I am very proud.”
