TWO new cases of the coronavirus were recorded across the NHS Highland area in the past day.

The region’s cumulative number of cases increased from 4952 to 4954 when the latest figures were released on Friday afternoon.

The number of people receiving treatment for the coronavirus in NHS Highland hospitals rose by one, to 11.

There were 543 positive tests for Covid-19 across Scotland in the past 24 hours – or 2.4 per cent of all those carried out during that window.

The number of people requiring hospital treatment for the virus fell below 300 – dropping from 310 to 296.

Of those, 26 were in intensive care. This was down six from Thursday’s update.

Sadly, another six deaths were recorded across Scotland from people who had tested positive in the past 28 days.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the north, no new cases were detected in NHS Shetland, NHS Orkney or NHS Eileanan Siar.

Forty-three fresh positive tests were registered across NHS Grampian, for a rolling tally of 14,224.

And 33 cases were recorded in NHS Tayside – taking its total to 14,069.

There have now been 216,142 confirmed cases of Covid-19 across the whole of Scotland since the outbreak began last year.

Some 2,322,832 people have now had their first Covid vaccination jag, with 279,814 having had their second.
