Hitrans makes a bid for £381,000 for projects throughout the Highlands and Islands

Transport partnership Hitrans has made a bid for £381,000 from Transport Scotland to deliver projects supporting active travel around the region.

The funding round, that has yet to be decided by the Scottish Government, would see a number of projects including a plan to allow more people to take bikes on the bus.

In a report to the partnership board, the funding of £181,000 for 2020-2021 projects has now been allocated and Hitrans hopes to increase the numbers of bikes being used around the region.

A spokesman for Hitrans said: "Following discussions with partners regarding potential projects, Hitrans has bid for £381,000 from Transport Scotland in 2021-22.

"If successful, the bulk of this funding will go to partners for delivery of actions from the active travel audit and masterplans.

"There will also be funding to continue the Bikes on Buses partnership with West Coast Motors, cycle parking linked to public transport, and for design work.

"In 2020-21 Hitrans had £187,000 from Transport Scotland for projects has now been allocated."

Bikes on buses, a partnership with West Coast Motors, will see the bus operator install bike racks within buses on routes serving Mull and Mid-Argyll.

Eight vehicles will be fitted out over 2020-21 and 2021-22 financial years, subject to confirmation of funding for 2021-22.

"Following bids from partnership advisors for funding to install cycle parking at transport interchanges and community hubs, bike stands and shelters will be installed in partnership with local authorities on Orkney, Skye and in Moray," he added.

"Two projects are being taken forward to improve active travel connections in Nairn and Lochgilphead.

"An active travel project is complete on Rose Street in Inverness and three design or small works projects are under way in Kirkwall, Uig and Lochgilphead.

"A new bike shelter was installed at Armadale."
