HEFTY fines could be dealt out to motorists in Ross-shire towns by the end of the month as the council roll-out of decriminalised parking enforcement continues.

New controls are set to come into force in Alness, Dingwall, Invergordon, Tain, Ullapool and Kyle of Lochalsh.

The Ross and Cromarty area committee heard on Wednesday that the relevant traffic regulation orders to decriminalise parking across the area are being introduced, allowing Highland Council to take over parking enforcement.

That will include on street waiting and loading restrictions, which were previously under police control, and follows a public consultation with communities across the region.

The committee was advised that live enforcement will begin this month with officers initially issuing warning notices to ensure drivers are aware of the new restrictions.

But principal officer for traffic and parking Shane Manning said: “I can see hard fines being issued before the end of the month.

“I hope we don’t have to because everyone will adjust their ways.

“So by the time we get into the full height of summer there will be a regular but random flow of enforcement officers on the streets of Ross and Cromarty.”

The committee chairwoman, Cllr Fiona Robertson, said: “I would like to thank the communities who have taken part in the consultation sessions for their feedback which has helped officers drawn up the necessary orders. The roll-out to other villages and towns across our area will begin in September.”

Communities set to feature in the September roll-out include Avoch, Fortrose, Gairloch, Rosemarkie, Muir of Ord and Munlochy. There will be consultation beforehand.
