The Met Office has issued a two-day thunderstorm alert for the Highlands.

The yellow warning – the least serious of a colour-coded system that includes amber and red for the most severe conditions – kicks in at 9am on Sunday morning and continues until midnight on Monday.

The warning for Sunday states: "While some places stay dry, hit-and-miss thunderstorms will develop, potentially bringing disruption in places."

The yellow warning means:

- There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds

- Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services

- Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures

- There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost

And then for Monday, it states: "While some places stay dry, areas of heavy rain and thunderstorms will continue...bringing possible disruption."
