Almost two weeks after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Scottish Tory leader Douglas Ross landed at Nigg the Conservatives finally have a candidate for the Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross seat – Dr Fiona Fawcett.

Mr Sunak was questioned at the event why he was campaigning in seat where the party he leads did not have a candidate making it – at the time – physically impossible for anyone to vote for him.

Mr Ross answered on his behalf, claiming there would be a full field of candidates in time for the election before attacking the SNP’s record on schools, health and infrastructure.

Now the Scottish Conservatives have selected a local campaigner Dr Fiona Fawcett to challenge the Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross seat with just four weeks to go in the upcoming general election.

Dr Fawcett was a GP for over 25 years, specialising in elderly care and breast cancer treatment. After working during the Foot and Mouth epidemic, Fiona studied agriculture at Scotland's Rural College. She now owns a small croft with her husband along with four dogs and two horses.

If elected, Fiona promises to give people a powerful voice and put an end to rural communities being treated like “second-class citizens”. She pledges to seek to rebalance the scales of power towards local decision making and stop the blight of central belt influence.

Dr Fawcett said: “It is an honour to have been selected for the Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross seat in the upcoming General Election.

“For too long rural communities, like those in the Highlands, have been ignored and treated like second-class citizens. It's simply not good enough.

“The planned industrialisation of the Highlands for renewable power is totally unacceptable. Farmers and crofters are facing significant pressure and financial uncertainty.

“Local health services have been badly eroded and roads have fallen into dangerous levels of disrepair. Local schools need better funding and support, and we desperately need locally driven change.

“If elected, I promise to fight for local people and local issues. I will be a dedicated, passionate, and hardworking representative, striving hard for a better quality of public services and infrastructure for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross.”
