A new driver was caught going the wrong way around a Ross-shire roundabout while police training was taking place.

Alistair Cameron (18) decided to take a ‘shortcut’ at the roundabout at Achnasheen on the A832 on July 21, 2024.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard how Cameron had been driving from Achnasheen to Gairloch when he decided to drive the wrong way around the roundabout at around 3pm.

Fiscal depute David Morton told Sheriff Gary Aitken that there had been police undertaking a rider improvement day in the area when the incident occurred.

Mr Morton said: “A number of road policing officers were using the roundabout.

“Mr Cameron has shortcutted the roundabout to get on his way and has navigated the wrong way.

“Other motorists observed him approaching them. Several police officers observed him going excessive speeds above the 40mph speed limit.

“Mr Cameron was stopped by police and spoken to for his driving.”

Cameron of Gairloch pled guilty to careless driving.

Sheriff Aitken fined him a total of £640, endorsed his license and disqualified him from driving for three weeks.

Cameron’s defence solicitor John MacColl said: “He has taken the ‘racing line’ and offers apologies for the manoeuvre.

“If he is going to be able to carry out his employment he will require his driving licence.

“It will be the last time he does this.”
