Residents at Innis Mhor care home in Tain can now enjoy a pub meal in the comfort of their own home.

The care home has opened its own not-for-profit bar serving drinks, meals and entertainment for residents and, once the lockdown is over, their relatives.

And for one resident, a former landlady, the pub marks a trip down memory lane and a chance to get behind the bar again after years of retirement.

The new pub features a traditional wooden bar that was recovered from a former guest house in Grantown, which was recently converted into Parklands’ new corporate headquarters at a cost of £805,000.

The bar tables are made of reconditioned barrels supplied by Speyside Cooperage.

Jackie Macrae, manager of Innis Mhor said: “The new bar has been in the pipeline for several months and was something the residents themselves suggested at one of our regular meetings. Some people told us they missed the atmosphere of the pub but didn’t always feel comfortable going out.

"So, we decided to bring the pub to them and open their very own local here at Innis Mhor, where residents can relax and enjoy a drink in a safe and familiar environment.

“We’re delighted with the results. It has all the charm of a traditional pub and we plan to serve bar meals and provide musical entertainment. Our residents are very sociable and love to listen to live music. Once the lockdown ends, we plan to invite relatives twice a week for bar meals with their loved ones.”

The new bar will open every Wednesday and Saturday afternoon under the helm of resident Eileen Brice, a former pub landlady, supported by Innis Mhor activities coordinator Bryony Ross.

Eileen previously owned the Rose and Crown pub in Wiltshire and the Queens Arms in Maidenhead.

Ms Macrae added: “Eileen is a natural behind the bar and the residents love her banter and sense of fun. With her years of experience, we know we’re in good hands!”

The new bar was officially opened by shift leader Libby Hay who has worked at Innis Mhor since it opened in 2014, and before then at Duthac House.

It will be funded by donations and fund raising.
