EFFORTS to bring a historic Tain building back into use have taken a step forward after a community consultation in the town.

Tain and District Development Trust (TDDT), which has already secured £100,000 worth of funding for projects, won support to make changes to its constitution paving the way for using the community right to buy scheme.

It’s looking at the best way to move the Tain Picture House project forward with a view to securing larger pots of funding. Lachie Stewart, an architect and TDDT director, said: “What came across on the evening is that people really hold the Picture House in high regard and want to see it restored and they want to enjoy using it again and to pass by and see the lights on again.”

The disused building holds an important position in the townscape of Tain sitting between key buildings including the courthouse and Royal Hotel. The building previously played a central role in town life as a public hall and cinema.

Trust chairwoman Sarah Mackenzie said: “It’s so encouraging to see the extent of the support we have from our local community. As a community-led organisation it’s essential that the voice of our community is heard and that their needs are reflected in all project activity.

“With community capacity building in mind, we asked our members to share their skills and sign-up to volunteer and we were overwhelmed by the number of people that came forward.”

She said TDDT will continue to build close links with other local groups to make the best use of the community’s resources. She added: “As always any support, be it time, money or expertise to move projects forward, is greatly appreciated.”

The group has already successfully bid for funding for itself and partner projects from FirstPort, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, SSE Beatrice Wind Farm, Beinn Tharsuinn Wind Farm Trust and Highland Council.

It is establishing a community enterprise hub on Stafford Street and appointing a community fund manager, business development manager and an administrator.
