AN Easter Ross community staged a Christmas lights switch-on with a difference tonight when the event was livestreamed from its High Street.

The lights switch on in the royal burgh of Tain is traditionally one of the community highlights of the year, attended by hundreds of people.

Covid-19 restrictions meant that was ruled out this year but the community found a way around it by inviting people to join a livestreamed event via Facebook.

Tain and Easter Ross Highland councillor Alasdair Rhind spoke of the challenges of a tough year but referred to the resilience shown by the community.

He urged people to support local businesses in the town in the run-up to Christmas.

Gala Queen Leah Mackenzie was joined by attendants and Lily Grant delighted viewers and onlookers in the street with a selection of songs performed live.

The effort by Tain Gala Association was appreciated by viewers, many leaving notes of appreciation via social media.

"Well done and beautiful singing," wrote Lesley Mackenzie.

"Well done guys the lights are looking fabulous! Keep up the good work!!!" said Elaine Quinn.

A number of people no longer living in the town voiced their appreciation too.
