A bridge at a popular Ross-shire beauty spot has been closed to the public after damage was found.

The Alexandra Bridge, a B-listed 19th century suspension bridge which crosses the mouth of the River Tain, has been closed to the public until damaged decking can be repaired.

The bridge is popular among visitors and locals alike, who use the pedestrian bridge during circular seafront walks in and around the Tain Links area.

Confirming the closure, a spokesperson for Highland Council said: “Members of the public are advised that the Alexandra Bridge at Tain Links is currently closed.

“A recent site visit to the footbridge identified clear signs of deterioration to the timber boards on the walkway.

“The bridge has therefore been closed to the public and, in the interests of public safety, will remain closed until the walkway has been repaired.

“Highland Council is engaging a local contractor to complete the works to enable the bridge to reopen as soon as possible.”

It is the second pedestrian suspension bridge to suddenly close to the public in as many days, after the Infirmary Bridge in Inverness was forced to shut when an inspection found a hanger connected to the bridge deck had “sheared” off.
