A war veteran who later became a dance instructor has celebrated her 100th birthday in style in Ross-shire.

Mary (Thelma) Main Weavers – a resident at Urray House care home in Muir of Ord - joined family and friends for a special birthday bash which included a surprise performance from the dance troop she used to teach.

She was also presented with a birthday card from Her Majesty The Queen.

Not to be undone, Thelma posed for pictures on a 'throne' at Urray House.

Thelma originally comes from Fife and grew up in Burntisland and Aberdour. She did a commercial course in Edinburgh and became a secretary.

Her family moved to England just before World War 2. Thelma joined the Women’s Royal Naval Service serving as a secretary in London through the war.

After the war, she married and had two children, Duncan and Sheena, and worked as a secretary at British Rail for many years.

Some years later she married Cyril Weaver who had been in the SAS. They were dance teachers together and moved to Nigg. In more recent years, they lived in Balintore. Thelma was widowed several years ago.

Jeanette Maclaren, activities coordinator at Urray House, said: “We had the most fantastic day celebrating Thelma’s 100th birthday with family and friends. We enjoyed an afternoon of great food, music and dancing. It was great seeing the smiles on so many faces and Thelma really enjoyed seeing the dance troop she used to teach.”
