COUNCIL house tenants hit by worsening finances amid the Covid-19 pandemic are being pointed towards a new resource detailing what help is available.

Highland Council has produced a new ‘Tenant Briefing’, which advises tenants on what housing services are available, and where they can access help and support if they need it.

And the local authority has also stressed that the new material may also be of use to people who are not council tenants.

The briefing contains information on a wide range of topics including energy advice and how to apply for help with fuel costs, details on changes to homelessness services, how to get housing support, and support for anyone in rent arrears.

It also highlights information on what practical support is available in communities, contact details for the council’s welfare support team, information on Covid-19 Self Isolation Support Grants and national helplines to help people to stay connected. The briefing also gives a long list of key contact details for organisations and service providers.

Councillor Ben Thompson, the chairman of the housing and property committee, said: “As a landlord, the council’s priority is maintaining the welfare of our tenants and providing people with essential services and advice at this difficult time.

“This briefing contains the most up-to-date information about where they can seek advice if they have any concerns about their wellbeing, income or other tenancy matters. Although the information on housing services is aimed specifically at Highland Council tenants the help and support information is useful for anyone.”

He added: “We do expect further guidance from the government over the coming weeks and our Tenant Participation team will be able to provide relevant information as and when we receive it.”

The Tenant Briefing is available by clicking here.

Anyone in need of help regarding the Covid-19 situation they can call the council’s free helpline on 0300 303 1362. If anyone has a query related to other council business, they are advised to contact the council’s service centre on 01349 886602.
