Strong demand reported at Dingwall and and Highland Marts in sale of prime cattle and sheep

FIRM demand continued at Dingwall and Highland Marts yesterday at a sale which saw more than 1000 sheep and 23 cattle.

The mart sold 23 prime cattle.

Prime bullocks (3) averaged 231.3p (-14.7p) and sold to 236.0p per kg for a 595kg Simmental cross from Bridgend Farm, Dingwall and £1,499.95 gross for a 655kg British Blue cross from Greenlands, Arabella.

Prime heifers (20) averaged 232.8p (-9.1p) and sold to 251.0p per kg for a 550kg Limousin cross from Bridgend Farm, Dingwall selling to Messrs Fraser Brothers, Butchers, Dingwall and £1,499.95 gross for a 655kg Limousin cross from Bridgend Farm, Dingwall.

The mart sold 1171 prime sheep.

New season lambs (550) averaged 234.8p (+11.5p) and sold to 241.4p and £115 gross.

Feeding sheep (621) sold to £140 gross.

New season lambs (550) averaged 234.8p (+11.5p) and sold to 241.4p per kg for a pen of 35kg Mules from Dalmagarry Farm,

Moy and £119 gross for a pen of 48kg Beltex crosses from Kinnahaird Farm, Contin.

Feeding sheep (621) sold to £140 gross for a Texel ram from 17 Distillery Cottages, Tomatin.

The verdict: “Lamb trade continues to band along at a rate of knots as vendors are venturing home with prices in their pockets quite like nothing they’ve seen before at this time of year. All classes were sharper again and demand remains firm.

"Another good number of ewes saw a lot more feeding types forward and flesh was in seriously short supply. Continental and sorts cashed in every bit as dear as the last few weeks, whilst Blackface ewes remain harder to cash.”
