STRATHPEFFER is set to draw upon its past for this year’s edition of StrathPetal, which will see locals throw open their garden gates to raise money for good causes on August 16 and 17.

Strathpeffer was developed by the Victorians after the sulphurous water from local springs was deemed to have health benefits. The Victorian enthusiasm for new ideas from across the Empire spread to their gardens, and in the late 1800s and early 1900s the village had a thriving horticultural society.

“This is reflected in our event, some 120 years later,” explained Alison Munro-White, a member of the organising team. “Some of the gardens that were winning prizes back then, will be open over the weekend, and just as they had in 1910, we are planning to have a Strathpeffer Sweet Pea Competition with all the entries on display.”

There will also be live music in the square, refreshments, a raffle and a vintage MacBrayne’s bus to help folk get around the gardens. The event runs from 11am until 4pm both days, and tickets can be bought in the village square or at the old station.

“We hope folk from Ullapool will come along to support the event, it will be a great day out whether you're a keen gardener or not,” added Alison.

Proceeds will be shared between local environmental projects and Alzheimer Scotland.
