POLICE have urged motorists to take added care after “hazardous road conditions” sparked “a number” of collisions.

The warning came as an active Met Office yellow weather warning for ice and snow remained in force across much of the Highlands on Monday morning.

A police spokesman: “Once again this morning sees hazardous road conditions In the North Highland area in particular, Easter Ross, Sutherland areas.

“Police are already dealing with a number of road traffic collisions. Please drive according to road conditions if you have to go out.”

The current Met Office warning covers all of Caithness, Sutherland, Ross-shire, Inverness, the Great Glen and Nairnshire. The alert is in force until 11am.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Wintry showers across western Scotland and the Northern Isles will turn increasingly to rain at low levels during the early hours of Monday allowing icy patches to form.

"On hills and mountains, showers will remain as snow. A few centimetres of snow are possible on hills above 200 metres.”

The police's warning follows a similar plea on Friday, which was also prompted by a number of crashes across the Highlands.
