THE A87 has reopened following a serious road accident earlier this afternoon.

The accident was described as serious by Traffic Scotland, which said the road was closed in both directions when it first reported the collision shortly before 3pm.

At the time the report on Traffic Scotland said: "A87 closed in both directions at Auchtertyre due to a serious road traffic crash.

"Emergency services are on scene."

However, a person on the scene said the collision was further east, saying: "Location is actually Achnagart Quarry, A87 at Glenshiel approximately 19 miles east of Kyle of Lochalsh. Air ambulance is in attendance."

Live traffic maps showed heavy traffic at both locations.

Traffic Scotland has now done an update, which it posted shortly before 5pm, to say that the road had reopened in both directions and "all lanes are now running".
