SEAWEED snacks have proven a hit for an Alness firm after it picked up 270 new trade customers after securing a listing with Bidfood Scotland six months ago.

SHORE: The Scottish Seaweed Company, said the prestigious Bidfood listing helped drive the company’s rapid growth, highlighted by the expansion of its team for 2020.

Founded in Wick and based in Alness, SHORE: The Scottish Seaweed Company, makes delicious, flavoured seaweed puffs from locally hand-harvested Scottish seaweed. The snacks are gluten free and are also suitable for vegans.

The company reports positive feedback from a number of customers on how well the product is going down with consumers, including from multiple National Trust for Scotland sites.

SHORE are also expanding their existing range with a new 80g sharing format to build on the UK-wide distribution they now enjoy.

They’re also launching two completely new ranges in January: sweet and savoury roasted snack bags of ‘clusters’ made with puffed rice and seaweed and a range of seaweed pestos.

Keith Paterson, Director, said that the support they’d received from Bidfood Scotland’s sales team had been fantastic. He said: “This listing has opened up a lot of new opportunities for us and allowed us to reach new customers right across Scotland, that we would never have been able to reach by ourselves.

“It’s a very exciting time for the company as we’re growing fast and expanding our sales team next year, as well as launching several completely new products. Establishing a new brand has involved a lot of hard work but having Bidfood as a partner will open up even more doors for us in new sectors, especially in the trade.”

Bidfood Scotland’s Supplier Development Manager, Katie Sillars, continues to work closely with the producer to help them reach new customers and increase sales.

SHORE was chosen alongside two other small producers, after a call out from Bidfood Scotland, for companies making healthy and delicious food and drink as part of the foodservice provider’s ‘Grabbing Goodness on the Go’ campaign.

The two other winners were Growers Garden, a sustainable broccoli crisp brand, that uses the 'ugly' broccoli ends which would normally be discarded as food waste, and The Start-Up Drinks Lab, makers of lower sugar/lower calorie, fine craft sodas.Bidfood Scotland’s Supplier Development Manager, Katie Sillars, said: “Having access to our network of customers, gives innovative, new businesses like SHORE, a fast track to reach a very wide customer base and helps to support local jobs and the Scottish economy. In time, some of these small producers may even pick up a national UK listing.”
