EIGHT primary schools within the Highland Council area – four of them in Ross-shire –won't open this morning.

Parents at one Black Isle school were told of the development last night.

The setback comes after a coronavirus lockdown which was instigated back in March followed by the school summer holiday period.

Highland Council's closure list for today includes Shieldaig Primary, Tarbat Old Primary, Tore Primary and Kyle Primary.

Also on the list are Knockbreck Primary (Skye); Kyleakin Primary; Mallaig Primary and Rum Primary.

While Highland Council's school closure page, which is updated at 7am each morning, generally gives reasons for closures, those are not listed.

It is understood parents have been informed by alternatives channels of communication.

Tore Primary on the Black Isle wrote last night on its social media page: "Dear parents. Please can you check the email that you receive school communication from? Due to unfortunate circumstances outwith our control, we are unable to open the school on Wednesday August 12.

"The email details reasons with a letter from the chief executive. Please accept my sincere apologies for this late correspondence."

This story will be updated.
