100 Years Ago

Friday, July 11, 1919

IN the Dingwall Sheriff Court on Monday before Sheriff the Hon. Huntly D. Gordon, two marines from Invergordon were charged with breaking into a jewellers shop in High Street, Invergordon. The case was adjourned for investigation and on the application of Mr W S. Dewar, solicitor, Dingwall, the accused were liberated without bail.

A very successful dance was held in the Drill Hall, Fortrose, on Friday evening. “An Encore Peace Dance,” it was called, and the young folk thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Mr Angus Mackenzie acted most efficiently as M.C., and a small committee were assiduous in their attention to the comforts of those present. Songs were sung during the evening. Teas was served about 11.30. Fine dancing music was supplied by Mrs Kerslake, Misses Knight, Stuart, and Macfarlane, (piano), and Mr J Thomson (violin).

Inverness Town Council have declined to give a donation towards the Joint Show at Dingwall. Treasurer D. F. Macdonald said the show was not a local one and as the farmers had been doing pretty well for some years he thought they should run their own show.

Friday, July 11, 1969

THE second heat of the search of Dingwall's Gala Queen was held on Saturday evening, and the six girls chosen for the final, which was held on Wednesday were: - Linda Urquhart, Patricia Mackay, Margaret Grant, Jacqueline Bremner, Kay Maclennan and Verna Maclennan. This year's Queen is Miss Angela Finnie, who will be crowned on Monday at the Academy Playing Fields. Her attendants are the Misses Sybil Bain and Maureen Campbell.

Miss Mary Macleod, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs James Macleod, 1 Seaforth Road, Ullapool, graduated M.A. with honours in History at Edinburgh University on Friday. Mary, a pupil of Ullapool School, on receiving a prize in the Highland Bursary competition, proceeded to Dingwall Academy, where she attained six “Highers” on fifth year, and was admitted to Edinburgh University where she further excelled herself by obtaining an Honours degree at the age of 21.

A FIGHTING fund was set up at a meeting protesting against proposals for a super tip at Alness and hundreds of pounds was raised.

Almost 700 people turned up at the meeting on Wednesday night in the Averon Centre, Alness, in support of protest group AGAST (Alness Group Against Super Tip).

They gave another resounding “NO!” to the proposal by Evergreen Land Management Ltd for the dump at Caplich Quarry.

Activity both on and off the park has been brisk over the past weeks due to the fast approach of Ross County's Scottish League debut.

Although the focus of work has been on the construction side manager Bobby Wilson has been discussing moves with players in order to improve his squad. Unfortunately, County have been unable to attract ex-Caley and Thistle man Roddie Davidson to fill the gap left by the injury to Johnston Bellshaw.
