A “TEMPORARY” classroom solution at a rural Ross primary school is finally being demolished — after 72 years.

The Highland Council has confirmed that work is taking place to demolish Strathgarve Primary School’s wooden demountable classroom — which was first installed in 1953 as a “temporary solution” for the growing school roll.

In November 2023, the building was officially deemed to have “substantial structural issues”, with all eight pupils at the school being moved to the main school block instead.

Explaining more about the wooden classroom, Garve and District Community Council said: “After being installed as a temporary solution for the increasing school roll in 1953, the wooden demountable classroom at Strathgarve Primary School reached the end of its life last year.

“Whilst the children are on half-term break, the classroom is being demolished after 72 years. Not a bad temporary run, it has to be said!”

A Highland Council spokesperson confirmed that work began on October 13, with an estimated completion date of October 24.
