PARENTS in a Ross-shire community have been urged to apply now for a new child payment which comes into effect early next year.

The Scottish Government launches its new Scottish Child Payment from February 15. This will entitle families on certain benefits or tax credits – and who have children aged under six – to £40 every four weeks for each child.

And Ardross Community Council has urged eligible families to apply now so they don't miss out.

A spokesman for the community council said: "A new child payment will be available from February 15 for families with children under six.

"Applications can be made from now and an early application would be really sensible to avoid a delay when the fund is launched as I imagine if all apply at once there will be a back log in getting the all processed. Do please pass the word on to families who may be eligible."

Announcing the payment, Social Security Scotland said: "We're taking applications now! This new payment will open on Monday, February 15.

"It's a payment for families on certain benefits or tax credits. Eligible families will get £40 every four weeks for each child under six. Find out more at mygov.scot/benefits or call us on 0800 182 2222."
