An up-and-coming musician from the Black Isle is among the nominations for a top music award.

Cromarty singer, writer and multi-instrumentalist Tamzene is in the running for the best newcomer gong in the annual Scottish Alternative Music Awards (Sama).

A three-day public vote will open tomorrow on the Sama website, with the winners announced on the live-streaming platform, Twitch, on November 18.

Tamzene, who has Jamaican and Irish heritage, started learning violin and piano aged eight.

At 14, she picked up the guitar and embarked on writing her own material.

The awards are run by Creative Scotland in partnership with Drygate Brewing, Help Musicians, the Musicians’ Union and others.

Jamie Houston, Creative Scotland music officer, said the number of bands and artists to emerge every year never failed to astonish.

"Behind the curtain of the mainstream is a world of talent which demands widespread attention," he said.
