Ross-shire Journal August 2024 review in front pages





AUGUST in Ross-shire brought a wide variety of stories to the front page of the paper, a common theme the amazing community spirit shown across the county.

August 2

The Black Isle Show brought generations of families together alongside thousands of revellers.

We pictured ‘tractor-daft’ tot Sorley Lawson found his way onto our front page with Dad Dave and granddad Douglas enjoying the moment.

Elsewhere there were concerns over plans for an HMO in Muir of Ord and allegations of council ‘secrecy’ and Easter Ross councillor spoke out about “trial by social media” over a court case regarding disabled blue badge use which was dropped.

August 9

The Ross-shire Journal backed a campaign by Fyrish Gymnastics Club to safeguard the future of their Alness premises which were put up for sale by landlord BT.

In a heart-warming story, we told how 11 different people stopped to offer help to a woman whose car broke down in Tain late at night. Krystal McCartney, who had been going to pick up her mum from Inverness Airport, said she was deeply touched by the concern shown.

And Siobhan Mackenzie made a front page appearance ahead of a trip to New York where she would be picking up an accolade recognising her contribution to the fashion industry.

August 16

There was a stunning local response to the plight of a couple visiting Fyrish during a nightmare scenario for any parent.

The seven-year-old son of a Lithuanian woman went missing for four hours and as word got around scores of locals turned out to help in the hunt. Happily the young lad was eventually found. A local group which had helped spread the word paid tribute to big-hearted locals.

And the announcement of an opening date for the new Home Bargains store in Dingwall excited a lot of comment.

August 30

Ross-shire cycling hero Fin Graham had his eyes firmly on the prize(s) ahead of the Paris Paralympics.

There was a distinctly young vibe to the front page this week with an appeal by The Place youth group in Alness for support for forthcoming fundraisers.

The club had been involved in a wide variety of summer holiday events and incurred significant outlays as a result.

One of its own, Sophie Hynd, a sixth year pupil at Alness Academy, took it on herself to organise a major race night event at The Field, a community space in the town.
