STAFF at a shop in a Wester Ross community have appealed to customers to wear masks when they visit so they can continue to welcome four people at a time during the coronavirus lockdown.

The Lochcarron Food Centre Spar introduced the policy of allowing four customers at a time in on Friday of last week in line with guidelines – and on the proviso that people visiting wear a mask.

The shop used its Facebook page to say that it has given away so many masks in the last couple of days "that we have run out".

It said: "Unfortunately this means that if you don’t have a mask/scarf etc that you can cover your face with, we will have to go back to only two customers in at a time.

"Please please use some kind of face covering when coming in the shop as we’re loving having people back in and really don’t want to go backwards."

The store took a lead role early in the crisis in offering to deliver to local people unable to visit.

The appeal over masks prompted Peter Barr to write: "Good to see a slight easing of the government guidelines but you're wise to be cautious and deserve community support. You've all been doing a great job since this all began. Thanks."

The appeal is also in line with one made earlier today by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon about wearing masks in enclosed public spaces, like shops.
